The Vauxhall Ampera is the first car of its kind, an electric vehicle with a range-extended petrol engine. The internal combustion engine under the bonnet recharges the battery directly, and only runs when necessary.
This drivetrain configuration and the sleek and stylish low-drag body allow the Ampera to achieve an EU Combined Fuel Efficiency figure of 165mpg, with CO2 emissions of just 27g/km. The petrol engine means that owners can drive the Ampera as far as they like without having to worry about battery range, just like a normal car. Despite this, the cost-per-mile of driving in the Ampera is roughly 80% lower than that of a comparable petrol vehicle at current fuel prices.
In a city, where most of the Ampera’s miles will be undertaken using electric drive only, the savings are even larger - it's even exempt from the Congestion Charge.
The government will also contribute £5,000 to every Ampera buyer, as it qualifies for the plug-in car grant.
